Between the Lines: The Writing Experience
From January 2013 to August 2014 I directed Between the Lines, an international creative writing summer program for youth 16-19 from thirteen different countries hosted by the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa. In 2014 we brought together US students, Russians, and Arabic speakers from 10 different countries and territories in the Near East and Northern Africa. Participants attended a Global Literatures Seminar and creative writing workshops in either English, Russian or Arabic. Classes were taught by award-winning, published authors; this year’s lineup included US poet Kiki Petrosino, Russian novelist Alan Cherchesov, Lebanese short story writer Iman Humayden, and US playwright Kim Euell. The participants lived, ate and studied together on the University of Iowa campus, and were supervised by trained counselors from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
